Comets on Fire, Kid 606 and 16 Bitch Pile-Up
Great American Music Hall
$13

Considering I just wrote about them last week, I feel no need to discuss Comets on Fire again. If you want to listen, you can check out their myspace page. I will say that the couple of songs I caught of the Amoeba set killed. As for the other acts, Kid 606 (a.k.a. Miguel Trost Depedro) has made electronic music that’s all over the map. If you’re familiar with the output of his record label, Tigerbeat6, then you have of just how many different kinds of music he’s into. The guys done gabber, glitch, house, dub, mash-ups, and jungle, to name just a few of the electronic genres he’s tackled. And he’s done it all well. Last time I saw him, it was fairly house-oriented. But who knows what we’ll get this time. Perhaps it will have something to do with the friends he brings along. Hopefully, it’ll be nice and noisy. Even if Kid 606 doesn’t make much noise, rest assured the girls of 16 Bitch Pile-Up will, so get there early.

Cut Chemist
Amoeba Records
Free, 6:00 p.m.

After seeing Jurassic 5 at the Fillmore not too long ago, it’s painfully obvious just how important Cut Chemist was to the 5. While the MCs were, as always, spot on, the quality behind the turntables was not what it was in the group’s heyday. Especially evident on the new tracks was the fact that the production style of Numark sans Cut Chemist seemed to be a little less soulful and a little more radio-friendly. Don’t get me wrong, the show ranks with the best hip hop shows I’ve seen in ages; it’s just that without Cut Chemist, something was missing. Whatever that something is will be on display for free this Thursday at Amoeba, as Mr. Chemist plays a set in support of his new (and first “proper”) album, The Audience’s Listening. It’s all over the place in true turntablist fashion, but it keeps the groove going throughout, just like one of the Chemist’s live shows by himself or with Jurassic 5. Didn’t Ozomatli sort of go downhill after Cut Chemist left, too? Hmmm… I think I see a pattern developing here.
