Man, That Was Some Fiery Talk About Throwing The Demonic Man In the Furnace

Tonight you could head over to Cafe Du Nord and do the “folktronic hop” thing with Talkdemonic, a duo out of Portland who perform their instrumental post-rock over programmed beats. Not sure how it will sound live, but their sophomore release, Beat Romantic, is on playlist right now at KUSF and I’m loving it.

Tomorrow night is all about the Fiery Furnaces. The brother and sister duo Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger give you two chances to see them do their experimental- while-remaining-accessible rock shtick (think Capt. Beefheart) twice. First, you can see them at Amoeba at 6:00 p.m. for free. Or, if spending ~$20 is what you’re feeling, you should head over to the Fillmore. Not only will you get a longer set and infinitely better sound, but Man Man is opening. One of my biggest regrets of SXSW this year was missing these guys. They played like a dozen times, but it was always too far away or conflicted against something or nobody else was interested and it would have been a paint o meet up later. Blah. Anyway, while the Furnaces channel the spirit of Beefheart in their eclectic combination of genres, Man Man’s sound derives heavily from Beefheart’s while still being original. Also, everything I’ve read says their amazing live. They don’t stop at all, just rock straight through their set.

i caught the fiery furnaces in iceland in october and they put on a great show. i cant say i really liked much about their latest album but they are usually good live anyways.
yeah, i've seen them a couple of times. the first time i saw them in london, their first album had just come out and they certainly had a ways to go as far as coming into their own, but they certainly showed promise. when i saw them a little over a year ago (i think - time flies), they tore shit up at bottom of the hill. note: when i talked to them after the show, the whole band was talking shit about the show i saw in london. look how far they've come.
