My Most Schizophrenic Post Ever? So Much To Do...

Where to begin? This weekend is so jam packed with shows, I don’t even know.

Friday

Baaba Maal plays the Masonic Auditorium and graces us with a visit from Senegal bringing his fusion of traditional African music with pop and reggae as part of SF Jazz’s always great lineup.

For the more electronic musically minded, head over to the Hemlock and see Kid 606’s album release party so he can beat you upside the head with some sort of electronic music which will blend different electronic genres with his indie/punk attitude.

Steve Stapleton’s Nurse with Wound makes a rare U.S. appearance at the Great American, giving us a chance to see an extremely influential musician who has stayed fresh and relevant for 28 years. The man has covered so much ground in his ears (psychedlia, jazz, krautrock, industrial, free jazz, et al. all influence his work), so it’s difficult to determine what to expect, but you can certainly expect a great show. Note: NWW plays again on Saturday, and I’ll be there with freaking bells on.

I don’t know much about The Slip, but I saw guitarist Brad Barr play solo at SXSW, and I would expect great things from this jam band, who draw on a wide array of influences in their music.

If you want to get drunk and listen to ridiculous songs about , say, washing and pwdering your nuts, the Boom Boom Room has New Orleans’ Morning 40 Federation who play something that could only come out New Orleans: jazz funk swamp rock.

Calexico bring their Southwestern indie rock to the Fillmore with dark and heavy indie rock from Black Heart Procession opening. Note: They play again on Saturday.

Whew…

Saturday

Round Two of Nurse With Wound and Calexico/Black Heart Procession.

Tapes & Tapes at Café Du Nord. This one is sold out, but if you’re a Pixies fan, I would suggest trying to pick up a ticket at the door. I’ve only paid over face once since I’ve lived in San Francisco. But that’s just me. I didn’t try and see Coldplay at the Fillmore.

Tom Verlaine of Television fame is touring support of a couple of new releases. I’ve only heard the instrumental guitar release, but it is far from what I expected since I hadn’t heard any of his post-Television work. It’s damn fine, and I expect that this is a rare chance to see a legendary guitar player.

Kool Keith and Kutmasta Kurt play Mezzanine, and Mr. Keith is back with his oh-so-crazy alter-ego Dr. Octagon. You know the one. “Dr. Octagon is an incompetent, time-traveling, possibly extraterrestrial surgeon who pretends to be a female gynecologist and molests his patients and nurses.” Yeah, that’s fucking right.

Sunday

First Stern Grove concert of the season with Aimee Mann & Seu Jorge. If the weather is as nice as it is today, you’d better head out there. I don’t know jack about Ms. Mann, but Seu Jorge is most famously known for providing the Brazilian versions of David Bowie songs for The Life Aquatic’s soundtrack. Who cares anyway? If its this nice, I’ll go sit in Stern Grove and listen to Godsmack.

The evening brings us British post-punk/new wavy posters The Futureheads. Get more post punk from the openers, French Kicks.

And, finally…

Monday

Zu, Pink Mountain and Citay at Bottom of the Hill. Read what The venue’s website has to say:

Ezra Feinberg -- Piano Magic
"For Citay, heaven is filled with the spooky acoustic guitars, mandolins and organs of Led Zeppelin, the massive twin guitars of Thin Lizzy, and the blissed-out vocal harmonies of The Byrds. This music is beautiful, and seriously original." Village Voice

If I can work up the courage to get no sleep before my shift on Monday night/Tuesdday morning, I’m totally there. You should be too.
