Watch For Falling Angels

Thursday, June 22, 2006
Lansig-Dreiden and The Black Angels
The Independent
$12

What I previously said about The Black Angels:

“Disclosure: One of my friends manages the band. Disclosure: It doesn't matter because they're fucking good and I’d be going to the show regardless. Much like the truly great bands that immediately come to my mind upon hearing Austin's the Angels (Velvet Underground, The Doors, early Pink Floyd), the music may be dark, psychedelic, etc. while remaining universally accessible. Who doesn’t like VU, The Doors and Pink Floyd? That’s how people should feel about The Black Angels, because their brand of “drone ‘n’ roll” (not my term, but I love it) will have them blowing up before too long. It wasn't accidental that BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe was giving them a lot of play last year and it isn't coincidence that they are headlining a showcase at SXSW.”

I saw them 4 times during SXSW, and didn’t get tired of it. They’ve been touring and gigging a ton, and the live show is loving them for it. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out tonight. If you’re not yet convinced, check their MySpace page and stream some tunes.

Oh, and to make matters even better, enigmatic art-rockers Lansing-Dreiden (on tour as L-D Section II) are headlining the gig with a set of something of the electro-orchestral-post-punk variety. Oh, the opening, opening band is named Hot Shit. Hot shit, indeed.
