Orthrelm, Zombi and Subarachnoid Space

Guitarist Mick Barr and drummer Josh Blair make up the D.C. based duo Orthrelm, who play what I can describe in the minimal amount of time I have today before I shoot off to a KUSF Music meeting as some sort of instrumental-minimalist-prog-metal-trance-inducing-hardcore-avant-jazz. Imagine a fairly short heavy metal riff repeated over and over again (hundreds of times) with slight variations. VO, the duo’s recent LP which I purchased this weekend, is one 45-minute track of many of these of sonic explorations. It is quite challenging, but also quite rewarding. While their records are based largely on composition, the live shows rely heavily on improvisation. If nothing else, seeing these musicians’ technical ability as they hammer away at their instruments should cover the $8 cover. Prog enthusiasts Zombi and local space-rock outfit Subarachnoid Space round out the lineup.
